Five phrases that carry you from the arrivals hall to anywhere in Thailand. Open with these and doors — and faces — light up.

1. 1 สวัสดี sawatdi — Hello
2. 2 ขอบคุณ khopkhun — Thank you
3. 3 ขอโทษ khotthot — Excuse me
4. 4 ห้องน้ำอยู่ที่ไหน hong-nám yùu thîi nǎi — Where is the bathroom?
5. 5 อันนี้เท่าไหร่ an níi thaorai — How much is this?

Getting around

Taxis, buses, and the hunt for the right station — the phrases that move you across a Thai city.

1. 6 แท็กซี่ thǽksîi — Taxi
2. 7 เปิดมิเตอร์หน่อยครับ pòet mítoe nòi khráp — Please turn on the meter

   Male speaker — ครับ (khráp). Women end with ค่ะ (khâ).

3. 8 แท็กซี่ไปสนามบินเท่าไหร่ thǽksîi pai sanam bin thâorai — How much is a taxi to the airport?
4. 9 รถบัสคันนี้ไปไหน rot bat khan níi pai nǎi — Where does this bus go?
5. 10 สถานีรถไฟอยู่ที่ไหน sathani rótfai yùu thîi nǎi — Where is the train station?

Tickets and trains

Overnight trains to Chiang Mai, ferries south, the BTS across Bangkok — it all starts at a ticket window with these six.

1. 11 ซื้อตั๋วที่ไหน súe tǔa thîi nǎi — Where do I buy tickets?
2. 12 ตั๋วเท่าไหร่ tǔa thâorai — How much is the ticket?
3. 13 ขอตั๋วเที่ยวเดียว khǒ tǔa thiao diao — A one-way ticket, please
4. 14 ขอตั๋วไป-กลับ khǒ tǔa pai-klap — A round-trip ticket, please
5. 15 รถไฟออกกี่โมง rotfai òk kìi moong — What time does the train leave?
6. 16 ชานชาลาอยู่ทางไหน chanchalaa yùu thaang nǎi — Which way is the platform?

Flights, passports and luggage

The airport phrases that matter — including the two you hope you never need.

1. 17 เครื่องบินออกกี่โมง khrueang bin òk kìi moong — What time does the plane depart?
2. 18 เที่ยวบินล่าช้าสองชั่วโมง thîaobin lacha sǒng chûamoong — The flight is delayed two hours
3. 19 ขอดูพาสปอร์ตหน่อย khǒ duu phasapot nòi — May I see your passport?

   You'll hear this at immigration — now you'll recognize it.

4. 20 ฉันทำพาสปอร์ตหายค่ะ chǎn tham phasapot hǎi khâ — I lost my passport

   Female speaker — ฉัน plus ค่ะ (khâ). Men say ผม...ครับ (khráp).

5. 21 กระเป๋าอยู่ที่ไหน krapao yùu thîi nǎi — Where is my bag?

At the hotel

Check in, get the key, check out — the full hotel loop in four phrases.

1. 22 ห้องว่างไหม hong wâang mǎi — Do you have a room available?
2. 23 ผมมาเช็คอินครับ phǒm maa chekin khráp — I'm here to check in

   Male speaker — ผม plus ครับ (khráp). Women say ฉันมาเช็คอินค่ะ.

3. 24 ขอกุญแจห้องด้วยค่ะ khǒ kunchaae hong dûai khâ — The room key, please

   Female speaker — ค่ะ (khâ). Men end with ครับ (khráp).

4. 25 เช็คเอาท์กี่โมง chekao kìi moong — What time is check-out?
